Students of Dhaka University (DU) staged a protest on Sunday night (January 25) against controversial remarks by Shamim Ahsan, assistant secretary of the Barguna district Jamaat-e-Islami, who described the DU Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) as a “den of prostitution and drug activity.”

The protest, held in front of the Raju Sculpture at 9:00pm, was led by female students who called the statement misogynistic and obscene, warning that action would be taken against Shamim Ahsan. Students also criticised DUCSU for failing to respond visibly to the remarks.

During the protest, demonstrators burned an effigy of Shamim Ahsan.

DU administration condemned the statement in an official release, calling it vulgar, offensive, and outdated, saying it severely tarnished the university’s reputation and traditions.

The authorities alos urged Shamim Ahsan to publicly retract his remarks and issue an apology.
