DU students throw shoes at Ghulam Azam’s portrait in front of DUCSU
Students of Dhaka University (DU) staged a protest on Victory Day by throwing shoes at a photo of Ghulam Azam, expressing strong condemnation of his role during the 1971 Liberation War.
The protest took place around 1:30pm in front of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) building on Tuesday (December 16).
During the demonstration, students threw shoes at the photo and chanted slogans, including “Pakistani collaborators, beware.”
A participating student said Ghulam Azam and Nizami had opposed Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, and alleged that their ideological successors are still attempting to undermine the spirit of the war by portraying it as a foreign conspiracy. The student added that a recent move by Islami Chhatra Shibir to present Ghulam Azam as a “son of the soil” was unacceptable.
He said the act of throwing shoes at the photo on Victory Day was meant to register firm protest and reject any attempt to glorify individuals accused of collaborating against the Liberation War.
