DU suspends three teachers, relieves two from academic duties
Dhaka University administration has temporarily suspended three pro-Awami League teachers for threatening students and engaging in controversial activities during the July mass uprising. The suspended teachers are Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul-Islam of the Banking and Insurance Department, Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah of the Public Administration Department, and Professor A K M Jamal Uddin of the Sociology Department.
The decisions were made at a meeting of the university's highest decision-making body, the Syndicate, on Monday night, June 22, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor A B M Obaidul Islam.
The meeting also temporarily relieved two other teachers from academic duties. They are Professor Mohammad Azmal Hossain Bhuiyan of the Botany Department and Tashrik-e-Habib, a teacher who became known for singing on social media.
Additionally, former Chhatra League leader and Deputy Registrar Lovlu Molla Shishir has been temporarily suspended.
According to the Academic Committee's recommendations, Tashrik-e-Habib was relieved following complaints of damaging the university's image on social media.
The meeting also decided to cancel Golam Rabbani's General Secretary (GS) position from the 2019 DUCSU election and referred the matter of considering Rashid Khan for the position to the Legal Adviser for opinion. The Academic Council had earlier recommended the cancellation of Rabbani's GS position and the annulment of his MPhil programme admission.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Almozadded Al-Fesani said those suspended had various allegations related to the July uprising. Professor Azmal was relieved based on the Academic Committee's recommendations following complaints of threatening students and making derogatory remarks about female students' clothing.
