Dhaka court has granted bail to Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) vice president (VP) candidate Jalal Ahmed, also known as "Jalamoyee Jalal," in a case filed over the attempted murder of his roommate at a university dormitory.

The bail order was issued by Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman following a hearing on Sunday.

During the hearing, Jalal’s lawyer, Rafiqul Islam, claimed his client had been falsely implicated and was not present at the scene of the incident. He argued that Jalal is preparing for the upcoming Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination, scheduled for September 19, and urged the court to consider his academic obligations.

The prosecution opposed the bail plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted bail on a bond of Tk 5,000, with the condition that Jalal must submit his BCS exam admit card or routine.

According to the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station, the incident took place around 12:30am on August 26 at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall. Jalal allegedly disturbed his roommate, Md Rabiul Haque, by dragging chairs and turning on lights. When Rabiul objected, Jalal reportedly attacked him with a wooden chair, injuring his forehead.

He then allegedly struck Rabiul with a broken fluorescent tube, causing injuries to his chest and hand.

Other students rushed to the scene and took Rabiul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Following the incident, DU authorities expelled Jalal from the dormitory and handed him over to the police.

The attempted murder case was filed by the university authorities on August 27. Jalal’s bail petition was initially rejected, and he had remained in custody until today's ruling.

Jalal Ahmed is an independent candidate in the Ducsu VP race and a student of Dhaka University's 2013–14 academic session.
