DU’s Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall name restored after Hadi nameplate removed

Dhaka University’s Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall is set to revert to its previous name after the “Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall” nameplate was removed from the main gate on Wednesday (September 30).

The removal work began around 2pm, with the name “Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall” being restored in place of the Hadi nameplate.

Abdullah Al Noman, external sports secretary of the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Students’ Union, posted a photo of the ongoing work on social media.

He said the previous name was being removed to end confusion among visitors trying to identify the hall.

Noman said the nameplate was being removed by the hall administration.

Hall Provost Prof Md Akhteruzzaman declined to comment over the phone and advised reporters to contact the hall office for details.

The hall was renamed “Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall” by a group of students in December 2025 following the death of Osman Hadi, who was shot and later died.

Students had removed the existing nameplate and replaced it with the new name.

The latest move restores the name currently listed for the hall on Dhaka University’s official website.
