The Election Commission (EC) has received the electoral roll for the upcoming presidential election from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, completing a key procedural step in the process to elect the country's next head of state.

According to EC officials, the next stage will be the announcement of the election schedule, although the date for voting has yet to be finalised. The commission is expected to make a decision on the timetable in the coming days.

The presidential election became necessary after President Md. Shahabuddin resigned from office on July 24. Under the Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.

As part of the preparations, the Election Commission held a meeting with Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal on July 26, requesting the electoral roll required for the presidential vote.

While no election date was decided at the meeting, the receipt of the voter list has now paved the way for the formal announcement of the election schedule.

With the electoral roll in hand, the EC is now moving ahead with the final preparations for one of the country's most significant constitutional elections.
