Interim government’s Planning and Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud urged students from the seven affiliated colleges of Dhaka University (DU) return to their respective educational institutions without creating public distress.

A press release from Planning Ministry disclosed the information.

The press release said, “Since the formation of the interim government, students from various educational institutions and different teacher organizations have been protesting with various demands. The government is making every effort to restore order and a normal environment in the education sector, which has been in complete disarray".

To address the demands of the students of the seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University, the government has already formed a committee with relevant experts, which will quickly prepare a report within seven weeks. The problem began several years ago with an ill-conceived decision to incorporate the seven colleges into Dhaka University, removing them from the jurisdiction of the National University. This decision created issues for both Dhaka University and the seven colleges, resulting in various difficulties and inequalities for the students of those colleges. The problems are complex, and some time is needed to consider what a proper solution might be. In the meantime, students from one college have protested on the streets demanding that their institution be made a university on its own. Discussions have already taken place multiple times with student representatives. As a lifelong educator, I personally have full sympathy for the just demands of the students within our problematic educational system. However, it must be remembered that there is no precedent for making an immediate decision to form a new university through street blockades, protests, and ultimatums. In this situation, students are urged to exercise patience and return to their respective educational institutions without creating public distress.”
