Eight more die of dengue, 1,860 hospitalised
At least eight more people died of dengue in the past 24 hours, and 1,860 others were hospitalised across the country until 8:00am on Wednesday.
With the latest, the dengue death toll this year reached 289 since January, the fourth-highest annual toll in the country’s history. The number of hospitalisations reached 92, 216 according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
In the first seven days of October, 44 people died and 12,596 were hospitalised. At least 5,776 dengue patients were undergoing treatment at hospitals across the country.
In January, two people died and 1,081 were hospitalised, while February saw two deaths and 409 hospitalisations. Another 353 people were hospitalised in March and 640 in April, with no deaths reported in either month.
In May, one person died and 714 were hospitalised. The figures rose to 13 deaths and 2,907 hospitalisations in June, 36 deaths and 9,206 hospitalisations in July, 43 deaths and 20,536 hospitalisations in August, and 148 deaths and 43,774 hospitalisations in September.
Bangladesh experienced its first major dengue outbreak in 2000, when 93 people died and 5,551 were hospitalised.
The country recorded its highest annual dengue toll in 2023, when 1,705 people died and 321,179 were hospitalised. It recorded 575 deaths and 101,179 hospitalisations in 2024, followed by 412 deaths and 102,562 hospitalisations in 2025.
