According to Section 49 of the Representation of the People Ordinance, an ‘Election Tribunal’ has been formed in the High Court to hear petitions against electoral irregularities.

On the orders of the Chief Justice, a single bench headed by Justice Md. Zakir Hossain will hear these petitions. The matter was mentioned in the agenda of the High Court division on Thursday.

According to the agenda, the concerned bench will receive and hear election petitions, related rules and other petitions in accordance with the Representation of the People Ordinance of 1972, as amended by the Representation of the People (Amendment) Ordinance of 2001.

According to the law, elected members of parliament can file an application to the High Court’s Election Tribunal on allegations of electoral irregularities within 45 days of the publication of the gazette.

It is worth noting that in the 13th National Parliament elections held on February 12, voting was held in 299 out of 300 seats. The unofficial results of 297 seats were announced the next day. Later, the Bangladesh Election Commission published the gazette of the elected members of parliament.
