Electricity from Rooppur Nuclear Plant to hit grid by next year: Russian Envoy
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is expected to start supplying electricity to Bangladesh’s grid by next year, Russian Ambassador Alexander G. Khozin said on Monday (December 22).
Speaking at a press conference at the Russian Embassy in the capital's Gulshan, he described the milestone as a key step toward full commercial operation.
“The main focus now is the commissioning of Unit-1, which is in its final preparation stage. Final works, documentation, startup and adjustment activities, mandatory tests, and regulatory approvals are underway,” Khozin said.
On past allegations of financial irregularities, he said strict control and proper documentation have been maintained at every stage, ensuring transparency in procurement and project execution.
The ambassador also confirmed that the project’s loan repayment schedule has been revised, with the first installment due by September 15, 2028, following an intergovernmental agreement to extend the repayment period.
