Email threats to embassies work of fake group: DB
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has said the incidents of sending emails demanding extortion money to various embassies and government offices in Dhaka are the work of a ‘fake group’. Police suspect it may have been done to tarnish the country’s image and embarrass the government.
Md. Shafiqul Islam, DB chief Additional Commissioner, informed this while responding to journalists’ questions at a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Sunday (August 23).
He said a fake group is doing this work through the internet. Three to four people were taken for questioning based on the bKash numbers provided in the emails for sending the money. However, they are not involved in the incident and have no knowledge about the matter.
The DB chief said similar emails demanding threats and extortion have been sent to three to four embassies as well as several government offices.
In response to a question whether it was done merely for harassment, Md. Shafiqul Islam said they suspect the incident may have been carried out due to previous enmity, to damage the country’s image or to embarrass the government.
When asked if anyone has been arrested in connection with the incident, he said the matter is being investigated with importance. Efforts are on to identify the involved persons and bring them under the law.
The DB chief further said whenever any incident occurs, police investigate it with importance and they are hopeful that the mystery of this incident can be unravelled soon.
