Two computer businessmen were seriously injured after being publicly hacked by miscreants in the capital's Elephant Road area. The attack occurred on the road in front of the Multiplan Center on Friday night (January 10).

The victims are Ehteshamul Haque, the joint general secretary of the Elephant Road Computer Society, and Wahidul Hasan Dipu, its president.

A video of the incident later spread on social media. The video shows 4-5 people attacking Ehteshamul with a cleaver in front of the Multiplan Market. 6-7 other people, all wearing masks, are seen standing nearby. After being struck by the cleaver, Ehteshamul falls to the ground. During this time, pedestrians and vehicles can be seen passing by, but no one intervenes to stop the attackers. After about one and a half to two minutes, the attackers flee.

Tariq Latif, Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Newmarket Zone, told Views Bangladesh, "We have obtained footage from CCTV cameras, which shows that 10-12 individuals took part in the attack. A few of them have been identified, but their names cannot be revealed due to the ongoing investigation. Efforts are continuing to identify the remaining attackers."

"The investigation is focusing on three key aspects: whether there is any business dispute behind the attack, whether there are any issues related to the market association, and whether extortion is involved," he added.

The Newmarket police have stated that Wahidul Hasan filed a case on Saturday night regarding the attack.
