2 get life imprisonment in Sagira Morshed murder case

Two people have been sentenced to life in prison in the sensational Sagira Morshed murder case in capital's Siddheshwari. The accused are Anas Mahmud alias Rezwan and Maruf Reza. In addition to the prison sentence, the court fined them Tk50,000.

Judge Mohammad Ali Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-3 announced the verdict. Besides, the court acquitted Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury and his wife Syedatul Mahmuda alias Shaheen as the charges were not proven.

On January 16, 2020, the investigating officer of the case, Police Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), submitted the charge sheet to the court.

According to the charge sheet, the accused Shaheen had a rift with Sagira Morshed's family. Besides, Sagira disliked him a lot and there was a conflict between Sagira and Shaheen over educational qualifications. There was also a family conflict.

Accused Dr Hasan Ali Chowdhury beat Sagira's maid. In a family meeting, Shaheen threatened Sagira. The accused planned to kill Sagira at their house. According to the plan, Dr Hasan Ali made a killing contract with the other accused Maruf Raza for Tk25,000 in his chamber.

Maruf Reza and Anas Mahmud shot dead Sagira on July 25, 1989. After that, Sagira's husband filed the case as plaintiff.

On December 2, 2021, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh's court framed charges against four people including Dr Hasan Ali. After 31 long years, the official trial of this case started. Then on January 11 last year, Abdus Salam Chowdhury, the plaintiff in the case and Sagira Morshed's husband, testified in court. Through this, the testimony of this case began.
