‘Bangladesh Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad’ debuts

A new student organisation called ‘Bangladesh Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad’ has emerged from the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’, the platform of students who led the July Uprising.

Former coordinators of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Abu Baker Majumder and Zahid Ahsan have been made respectively the convener and member secretary of the organisation. Touhid Siam is the senior joint convener of the new student organisation while Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury and Ashrefah Khatun are the chief organiser and spokesperson respectively.

In addition, former coordinators of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Abdul Quader and Mahir Alam are respectively the convener and member secretary of the DU unit of Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad.

The organisation's executive committee was announced at a press conference at the Madhur Canteen of Dhaka University around 4pm, although it was scheduled to start at 3pm, on Wednesday (February 26).

Central convener of the organisation Abu Baker Majumder is a student of the Geography and Environment Department of Dhaka University from the 2019-2020 academic year. Abu Baker was the coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Earlier, he was the member secretary of the DU unit of the recently dissolved student organisation Ganothantrik Chhatra Shakti formed by Akhtar Hossain and Nahid Islam in 2023.

Member Secretary Zahid Ahsan is a DU student of the 2018-2019 session. He was the office secretary of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Ashrefah Khatun, appointed as the spokesperson, is a student of the 2018-19 academic year of the International Relations Department of DU. And Chief Organiser Tahmid Mudassir Al Chowdhury is a student of the 2018-19 session of the World Religions and Culture Department.

Meanwhile, before the announcement of the committee, private university students protested in the Madhur Canteen and TSC areas, alleging discrimination.
