Chhatra Dal seeks DU VC, proctor’s resignation over security failures
The Dhaka University (DU) unit of Chhatra Dal has called for the resignation of the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Proctor, accusing the administration of failing to ensure student safety and maintain campus security.
Speaking at a press conference held at Madhur Canteen on Saturday afternoon (May 31), DU Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos said, “The insecurity on campus and its surrounding areas has reached an alarming level due to the administration’s gross negligence and failure.”
Sahos criticised the administration’s inaction in several recent incidents, including the murder of student Tofazzal and the recovery of a hanging body in front of the Mathematics Building. “Despite repeated warnings, no effective steps have been taken,” he alleged.
He further accused the administration of failing to act against Chhatra League activists involved in vandalism, including the removal of anti-fascist hate columns and arson at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He also noted that the university authorities have not disclosed the list of individuals responsible for attacking students during last year’s mass uprising in July.
“The administration remains silent on issues like the activities of banned organisations, student assaults near the Raju Memorial Sculpture, and the growing influence of drug syndicates and outsiders,” Sahos added.
Chhatra Dal also condemned the administration’s inaction over written complaints of harassment faced by female students both online and offline, calling it “an example of extreme irresponsibility.”
“This university was founded with the blood of martyrs and deserves a secure environment,” Sahas said. “The failure to deliver on that promise makes the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and Proctor the only acceptable course of action.”
Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, Senior Vice-President Masum Billah, Vice-President Anisur Rahman Khandaker Anik, Senior Joint General Secretary Nasir Uddin Shaon, and Organising Secretary Nur Alam Bhuiyan Emon were present there.
