Dr. Yunus granted bail in embezzlement case
A Dhaka court on Thursday (May 2) granted bail to Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus and 13 other accused in a case filed over the misappropriation of over Tk25 crore of Grameen Telecom Workers' Profit Participation Fund.
Dhaka Special Judges Court-4 Judge Sayed Arafat Hossain granted them the bail. The judge fixed May 2 for hearing on charge framing in the case.
Earlier in the morning Dr. Yunus applied for conditional bail. Then he reached the court at 11:20 to appear in this case.
On May 30, 2023, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with its Dhaka-1 integrated district office on charges of misappropriation of Tk25 crore 22 lakh 6 thousand 780 from Grameen Telecom's workers' Profit Participation Fund. ACC deputy director Gulshan Anwar filed the case as the main plaintiff.
On February 1, ACC filed a charge sheet against Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr. Muhammad Yunus and 13 others. The accused have been charged under Sections 409/420/467/468/471/109 and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012.
On April 2, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain's court accepted the charge sheet and ordered the transfer to Dhaka's Special Judge Court-4 for the trial of the case.
