Drilling of exploratory gas well begins at Jamalpur
The drilling of the gas well of the 'Jamalpur-1' project in Madarganj, Jamalpur has officially begun. Those concerned are hoping that there is a possibility of getting an average of 10 million cubic feet of gas per day from this new well.
Mohammad Saiful Islam, Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Department, inaugurated the drilling of the well on Friday (January 24) afternoon.
If gas is found as expected in this project costing about 168 crore taka, the authorities hope to supply an average of 10 million cubic feet of gas per day from this well.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration, Energy and Mineral Resources Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam said that 100 new gas wells will be drilled across the country in the next two years to reduce the gas crisis. In addition, the government has taken the initiative to renovate 31 old gas wells.
He also said that large-scale imports are not possible due to lack of gas storage space. He also said that the government is working to increase the storage area.
The drilling in-charge of the well, Md. Rakibul Hasan, said, "A drilling rig has been installed." Initially, the well has been targeted to be drilled up to 2,800 meters underground. It is expected that natural gas can be found in three zones of the well. After the drilling, an average of 10 million cubic feet of gas is expected to be extracted from each zone per day. The extracted gas will be supplied to the national grid.
