'Fascist's face', 'Peace Pigeon' motifs burnt at DU
Two symbolic art installations created by students of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University (DU) for the upcoming Pohela Boishakh celebrations were burnt in a fire early Saturday morning in a suspected act of arson.
The installations included pieces titled 'Fascist's Face' and 'Peace Pigeon', both of which were part of the traditional festive preparations on campus. The fire reportedly broke out around 4:50am, during the time of Fajr prayers.
Speaking to Views Bangladesh, DU Assistant Proctor Md Israfil confirmed the incident, stating, "The fire appeared to be deliberately set, specifically targeting the ‘fascist’s face’ motif, which was completely destroyed. The Peace Pigeon figure was also burnt."
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, “We were informed of the fire shortly after it broke out. By the time the fire service arrived, the installations had already been reduced to ashes. At this point, we cannot confirm who was behind it, but the act was clearly intentional.”
University officials are currently investigating the incident. Authorities have promised to take appropriate action following the inquiry.
Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, is widely celebrated with colorful processions, art displays, and cultural programs—many of which are organized by the DU Faculty of Fine Arts. This year’s preparations had already begun when the fire disrupted the campus spirit.
