Former CPB President Shahidullah Chowdhury passes away

Former President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and labour leader Shahidullah Chowdhury has passed away.

He breathed his last at his residence in the capital on Friday (January 3) afternoon.

Shahidullah Chowdhury was a renowned leader of the labour movement in Bangladesh, who led all important labour movements starting from the war of independence.

Despite being physically ill for a long time, he had been leading the jute mill workers' movement since 2020 and served as the convener of the Pat-Suta O Bosrokol Sramik Karchari Sangram Parishad. He also served as the president of the Bangladesh Trade Union Centre.

Shahidullah Chowdhury was elected president of the CPB at a special national conference held in 1993. At that conference, Mujahidul Islam Selim was elected general secretary. Shahidullah Chowdhury served as president of CPB until 1999.

His political career began in 1964 when he joined the Latif Bawani Jute Mill as an ordinary worker. After that, he led various mass movements and fought for the rights of workers.
