Gonotantrik Chhatra Jote holds torch rally at DU against attacks in RU, CU

Gonotantrik Chhatra Jote, a coalition of left-wing student organizations, held a torch rally at Dhaka University (DU) to protest the Appellate Division’s release of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam and the attacks by Islami Chhatra Shibir on their rallies at Rajshahi University and Chittagong University.

The rally began around 8.00pm on Wednesday (February 28) from the university’s TSC area, marched through various parts of the campus, and concluded at Shahbagh.

Leaders of the left-wing student groups said that some Shibir activists are repeatedly trying to stir up trouble. They attacked our rally in Rajshahi yesterday, and we have heard about attacks in Chattogram today. Islami Chhatra Shibir is a pro-Razakaar (collaborator) and anti-Bangladesh group—there is no doubt about this.

It is important to note that ATM Azharul Islam, who was sentenced to death in 2014 for crimes against humanity, was recently acquitted by the Appellate Division. This decision sparked controversy across the country, and left-wing student groups have been protesting against it.
