The government will import 9 lakh metric tonnes of rice from India, Pakistan, Myanmar and Vietnam this year, said Ali Imam Majumdar, the interim government's food and land adviser.

He made these remarks in response to a question from journalists after inspecting the unloading of rice imported from Myanmar at the Chittagong port on Tuesday (January 21) morning.

Ali Imam Majumdar said that about 50,000 tonnes of rice have already arrived from Myanmar and India. 50,000 tonnes will also arrive from Pakistan.

He said that due to rice imports, the price of coarse rice in the market has decreased by Tk 5. In addition, a food-friendly program will be undertaken for 5 million people across the country during the month of Ramadan.
