JUCSU elections after 32 years: New roadmap published
The university administration has released the much-awaited roadmap for the Central Students' Union (JUCSU) elections of Jahangirnagar University. On Monday (December 30), the roadmap for the JUCSU elections was released through a notification signed by Jahangirnagar University Registrar (Acting) Dr. ABM Azizur Rahman.
The notification released stated that an election commission will be formed for the JUCSU elections on December 31. After that, the draft voter list will be published on January 10 and the final voter list on January 15. In addition, there are plans to formulate the election code of conduct on January 25 and announce the election schedule on February 1.
The Central Students' Union (JUCSU) is an important chapter in the history of Jahangirnagar University. The university officially started its journey on January 12, 1971. The following year, in 1972, JUCSU was formed. The first JUCSU election was held in the same year, where Golam Morshed was elected as VP and Rokon Uddin as GS.
Then, over time, JUCSU elections were held in 1974, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1989, 1990, 1991 and the last in 1992. Although a total of nine elections have been held since its establishment, no elections have been held after 1992. The student parliament has been inactive for 32 years, which has been a subject of discussion and demand among students for a long time.
Earlier, Zia Uddin Ayan, a student of the 50th batch of the Department of Government and Politics, went on a hunger strike demanding the activation of JUCSU. He started the strike at 10:30 am on Sunday in front of the new administrative building, vowing to continue until death. One of his two primary demands was taking immediate steps to make JUCSU functional. After 15 hours of continuous protest, he ended the strike at night upon receiving assurances from the Vice-Chancellor.
On December 17, the Public Relations Office of the university issued an urgent press release stating that a clear roadmap for the JUCSU election would be released within five working days. Today (Monday) was the final day of that deadline.
