In protest of the recent incident involving the dishonoring of the national anthem in Shahbagh, general students of Dhaka University gathered at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture and sang the national anthem in unison.

Students gathered at the foot of the Raju Sculpture and sang the national anthem together on Monday (May 12) at around 7pm. At the same time, they chanted slogans such as: 'No place for war criminals in Amar Shonar Bangla,' 'Who are you, who am I? We are all Bangladeshis,' 'No place for Ghulam Azam in the Bangladesh of 1971,' and 'No place for war criminals in the Bangladesh of 2024.'

Leaders and activists from various student organizations also joined the students. Among them were members of Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Federation, Chhatra Union, and the Democratic Student Council.

The students stated that during a recent event in Shahbagh, while the national anthem was being sung, a group of people insulted it by shouting "Fake, fake." In protest of this, they gathered in front of the Raju Sculpture to sing the national anthem together.

They further said that, as Bangladeshis, they cannot tolerate any insult to the national flag or the national anthem under any circumstances. Anyone wishing to engage in politics in Bangladesh must be respectful of the country.

During a blockade in Shahbagh demanding the banning of the Awami League and two other demands on May 10, , several videos surfaced on social media showing people interrupting the singing of the national anthem. In protest of this, the students held this programme.
