Professor Deen Mohammad Noorul Haque likely new BSMMU VC

Renowned ophthalmologist of South Asian Subcontinent Prof Dr Deen Mohammad Noorul Huq is likely to be the new vice-chancellor (VC) of Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

He will be the 12th VC of the university and would replace Prof Sharfuddin Ahmed. VC Prof Sharfuddin took charge of the medical university on March 2021 from the then acting VC Dr Rafiqul Alam.

Prof Dr Sharfuddin would be in-charge till March 28 and if all goes accordingly, Prof Dr Deen Mohammad Noorul Haque will take charge on upcoming days.

Prof Noorul Haque who had earlier served as the Director General of health directorate told the views Bangladesh that he has already been informed of the matter and he is awaiting for official confirmation.

Asked about his though over the appointment, he termed it as responsibilities to strive for excellence. “If the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina choose me for the post, it because she has put faith on me. And I will do my best so that I can transform the medical institute into a world class facilities centre,” he added.

Dr Deen Noorul Haque previously served as the Professor and director of National Institue of Ophthalmology. He also served as the President of Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB) as well.

Prof Huq is the recipient of prestigious Matin Gold Medal awarded by Ophthalmological society of Bangladesh, in 1998. The Association of Community Ophthalmologists in India honored him with the Srimati Pushparani Patnayak Memorial ACOIN award in 2010.

He also received AUSAID fellowship in Health Management Information System (HMIS) and Cataract Surgical Outcome Monitoring (CSOM) in 2010.

He also received prestigious Dr Alim Memorial Award from the prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
