Jahangirnagar University, known for its autonomous research-oriented education, is not only recognized for its academic excellence but also for its unique role in preserving environmental diversity. The entire campus, located near Savar, Dhaka, is surrounded by lakes, ponds, water bodies, and lush greenery. It is a sanctuary for migratory birds during winter, and many species of birds and small creatures thrive in its forests and water bodies. This open natural environment makes the university a special place for students. However, the unchecked construction of buildings in the name of development is threatening the beauty and biodiversity of this prestigious institution.

According to a news report published yesterday (14 August), several buildings have been constructed without adhering to state or university laws, motivated by personal gains. For instance, a crucial water body, which collects rainwater from the surrounding areas, is being filled to build the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. This project, which began in 2016 with the establishment of the Institute of Information and Technology building, poses a serious threat of waterlogging in the area due to the filling of the water reservoir.

Former Vice-Chancellor Professor Nurul Alam, supported by student political groups and local thugs, laid the foundation stone for this building. Although he has left, his influence remains, and work to fill the water bodies resumed during a time of national student protests. This led to a human chain protest last Tuesday by teachers and students, demanding an end to the construction. According to the protesting students, spineless teachers have contributed to the destruction of the campus’s biodiversity, and they have indiscriminately cut down trees and filled water bodies with the support of student political groups.

The university administration must urgently develop a proper master plan with input from principled faculty members before continuing any construction projects. This is not only an issue at Jahangirnagar University, as we have seen similar environmental degradation at many government universities across the country under the guise of development. While new buildings are indeed necessary, such projects must be executed with careful planning. No open space or water body should be destroyed for construction, as these are irreplaceable losses.

Moreover, no particular group should benefit from development projects at the cost of the university’s environment. The student protests represent a larger movement to eradicate corruption and irregularities in the country, and the interim government is determined to support this cause. We urge both the interim government and the university administration to take all necessary measures to protect the environment and biodiversity of Jahangirnagar University.
