Record-breaking remittance in history
In the current 2024–2025 fiscal year, remittance inflows have surpassed all previous records. Bangladeshi expatriates have sent a total of 25.27 billion US dollars to the country as of May 7. Previously, the highest remittance was recorded in the 2020–2021 fiscal year, totaling 24.77 billion dollars.
This information was announced by Bangladesh Bank on Monday, May 12. According to data from the central bank, from July 2023 to May 7, 2024, Bangladesh received 19.72 billion dollars in remittances. Up to May 7, 2025, the total remittance in the current fiscal year reached 25.27 billion dollars. In just the first seven days of this month, 735 million dollars were sent to the country, which is 22.3 percent higher than the same period last year, when the figure stood at 601 million dollars.
In terms of monthly figures, March saw the highest remittance in the country's history, when expatriates sent a record 3.29563 billion dollars. After Eid, in April, remittances totaled 2.75194 billion dollars, making it the second-highest monthly figure ever recorded. The highest amount of remittance came from Saudi Arabia during this time. Following Saudi Arabia, the top contributing countries were the United Arab Emirates, the United States, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Kuwait, Italy, Oman, Singapore, and Qatar.
Bangladesh received 491.42 million dollars from Saudi Arabia and 372.17 million dollars from the UAE in April. The United States had been the top remittance source during January, February, and March, but in April it sent 330.74 million dollars, dropping to third place. During the same period, the UK contributed 294.1 million dollars, Malaysia 210.9 million, Kuwait 162.73 million, Italy 150.59 million, Oman 148.34 million, Singapore 118.58 million, and Qatar 104.25 million.
Additionally, remittances came in from several other countries. Bahrain sent 64.53 million dollars, France 31.78 million, South Africa 28.86 million, South Korea 24.41 million, Canada 23.7 million, Germany 16.92 million, Australia 16.34 million, Greece 14.71 million, Jordan 14.47 million, and the Maldives 12.51 million dollars. Spain contributed 12.5 million, Mauritius 11.37 million, Brunei Darussalam 8.57 million, Japan 8.52 million, Portugal 7.38 million, Iraq 7.3 million, and Lebanon sent the equivalent of 685 million Bangladeshi taka. Other countries such as Poland, Sweden, and Finland sent 5.92 million, 5.5 million, and 3.81 million dollars respectively. Combined remittance from all other countries amounted to 42.18 million dollars.
