Robotic-assisted heart ring placement successfully conducted for first time in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, for the first time, the most advanced technology in robotic angioplasty, known as robotic-assisted heart ring placement, has been successfully performed. At the National Heart Institute Hospital, the heart ring was placed with precision using a robot on two patients who had suffered heart attacks on January 21.
The surgical procedure was led by Dr. Pradeep Kumar Karmakar, an associate professor and his specialized team at the hospital. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Director of the National Heart Institute and Hospital, Professor Dr. M. Kamrul Hasan Milon, and the Head of the Cardiology Department, Professor Dr. M. Salauddin Ullubi.
It is noteworthy that robotic angioplasty (placing heart rings using a robot) is a globally recognized procedure available in 160 countries, including the United States and India, where there are six such centers. Dr. Pradeep Kumar Karmakar stated that robotic angioplasty is currently the most advanced technology for placing heart rings worldwide.
Cardiologists traditionally perform angioplasty procedures manually, but the latest discovery is the use of robotic technology for this purpose. Through robotic angioplasty, specialists can remotely and precisely place rings in the coronary arteries. The robotic system consists of two components – one is the robotic arm located in the catheterization lab, and the other is the control section, where the primary cardiologist operates the entire procedure remotely.
Dr. Pradeep Kumar Karmakar said three advantages of robotic angioplasty or robotic heart ring placement. Firstly, the complex process of placing heart rings in the heart can be done very delicately and precisely through the robot. Secondly, it reduces the time required for the procedure compared to traditional direct angioplasty, benefiting the patients. Finally, the robotic system allows cardiologists to perform angioplasty remotely, providing convenience and efficiency in the process.
