Equal rights essential to realise spirit of independence: DU VC
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam has said the true spirit of independence will only be realised when equal rights, justice and freedom of expression are ensured in the country.
He made these remarks while chairing a discussion on the 'Significance of the Great Independence and National Day' at the university's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium on Sunday, March 29.
The Vice-Chancellor said Bangladesh's independence is the nation's greatest pride. The primary goal of independence was to eliminate social discrimination and ensure economic, social and democratic liberation. However, even after more than 50 years of independence, a gap remains between expectations and achievements.
He further said Dhaka University has played a significant role in every historic achievement, from the Language Movement to the Liberation War and the anti-autocracy movement. The genocide of March 25, 1971, remains a brutal example of barbarity at the university and across the country.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha attended as a guest. Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy Dr Md Selim Reza spoke as teacher representative, and DUCSU General Secretary S M Farhad spoke as student representative.
The Vice-Chancellor called for collective efforts to establish a discrimination-free, democratic and humane society. Emphasising integrated participation of teachers, students and staff in university administration, he described himself as a 'facilitator'.
He expressed hope that no discrimination or autocracy will be established in the country in the future, and that the new generation will build a just Bangladesh by learning accurate history.
