ERF calls for immediate action over murder cases against journalists
The Economic Reporters' Forum (ERF) on Monday (September 16) expressed deep concern over the recent inclusion of journalists in murder cases alongside political leaders, calling it a troubling development for both the media and society at large.
In a joint statement, ERF President Mohammad Refayet Ullah Mirdha and General Secretary Abul Kashem said journalists from various media outlets, including three members of the ERF, have been wrongfully implicated in these murder cases.
”This situation is deeply worrisome as it undermines the fundamental and human rights of journalists,” the statement read. "It will become increasingly difficult for journalists to fulfill their professional duties if they are subjected to such harassment under the guise of murder charges."
The ERF emphasized that the inclusion of journalists in these cases appears to be intentional, aimed at harassing them despite their lack of involvement in any criminal activities.
ERF General Secretary Abul Kashem also condemned the inclusion of ERF members in these cases, demanding immediate withdrawal of their names and calling for punitive measures against those responsible for filing these false charges.
