Excessive mobile addiction as harmful as drugs: IGP

Police Inspector General Md Ali Hossain Fakir has called on students to build themselves as honest, ethical and humane individuals. He made the remarks as chief guest at a Bangladesh Police scholarship distribution ceremony for children of police personnel who achieved GPA 5 in SSC, HSC and equivalent examinations in 2024 and 2025 at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh Police Lines on Saturday morning, September 5.

The scholarship, funded by the Bangladesh Police Welfare Trust, was distributed at the event. Additional IGP (Administration) AKM Aulad Hossain presided over the ceremony, which was also addressed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed.

Speaking to the students, the IGP said the honour being given to them is not just an award but a recognition of their talent and hard work, and a symbol of faith in their future and potential. He said talent helps people move forward, but honesty, humanity and moral values make a person truly great. Students must not only be good learners but also good human beings, and must cultivate humility, compassion, responsibility, discipline and patriotism alongside academic achievement.

The police chief warned students to stay vigilant against drugs, reminding them that drugs are a fatal trap. At the same time, excessive addiction to mobile phones, social media and internet games is as harmful as addiction to narcotics. He advised them to use technology rather than letting technology use them.

DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed congratulated the students and urged them to work hard continuously to maintain success and to reduce screen time to focus more on studies.

At the event, a total of 2,113 students received scholarships over 2024 and 2025, with 360 receiving their awards formally in Dhaka. Others will receive scholarships through their respective district Superintendent of Police offices.
