Ex-deputy education minister Milon dies
Former Deputy Education Minister Golam Sarwar Milon is no more (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihe Rajiun).
He died of cardiac arrest at his residence in the capital early on Sunday (April 26).
The former MP from Manikganj-4 constituency was 69 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Fatema Sarwar, son Sabayer Sarwar and daughter Tanzia Sarwar Ami, along with numerous admirers and political comrades.
His son Sabayer Sarwar said that his first janaza will be held at Singair Pilot High School grounds in Manikganj after Zuhr today. He will be buried after the second janaza in Dhaka.
It is known that he was active in politics since his student days. He served as the founding president of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal during the 1981-82 term and became known as an influential student leader of Dhaka University.
He was also involved in the politics of the Bhashani NAP-supported leftist student organization. He participated in the anti-Ershad movement of the time and was imprisoned.
Golam Sarwar Milon joined the Jatiya Party in 1986 and was nominated as a member of the Presidium.
Milon was elected as a member of parliament from the then Manikganj-4 constituency as a Jatiya Party candidate in the third and fourth parliamentary elections. He also served as the Deputy Minister of Education in Hussain Muhammad Ershad's cabinet.
After the controversial One-Eleven in 2007, he joined Ferdous Ahmed Qureshi's Progressive Democratic Party (PDP). Later, he rejoined the Jatiya Party.
Before the 11th parliamentary elections, he joined former President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury's Bikalpakdhara and contested from Manikganj-2 constituency with the Kula symbol and was defeated.
