Ex-DGFI chief Afzal Naser arrested
Former Director General of DGFI, Md. Afzal Naser, known for his association with the 1/11 government, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, officials confirmed.
He was arrested late Sunday night (March 29) from a house on Road No. 12 in the capital's Mirpur DOHS area, multiple DB sources have confirmed the matter.
Confirming the arrest, DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam said "Naser was taken into custody in the early hours of Sunday. The officer did not provide details on the reasons behind the arrest."
Sources from the DB indicated that Naser’s arrest follows interrogations of former Lieutenant Generals (Retd.) Masud Uddin Chowdhury and Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former Director Generals of the Defense Intelligence Directorate (DGFI).
Afzal Naser served in DGFI from March 2006 to March 2008 and was dismissed from the army on November 5, 2009. A native of Senbagh in Noakhali, he joined the Bangladesh Army on July 4, 1984.
His father is Mofazelur Rahman Bhuiyan, and his late mother was Nurmahal Begum. At the time of arrest, Naser was residing at House 864, Road 12, 2nd Avenue, Mirpur DOHS.
Earlier, two controversial retired army officers, Lieutenant Generals Masud Uddin Chowdhury and Sheikh Mamun Khaled, associated with the previous 1/11 government, were also arrested and remain in DB custody.
