A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for former Food Minister Advocate Kamrul Islam in the case over the killing of jute trader Md. Monir during the July movement.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sadikur Rahman passed the order on Wednesday (September 24) after a hearing.

Shahbagh Police Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan Pulak, the investigating officer, had sought a 10-day remand. Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman argued in favor of the remand, while defense lawyer Aftab Ahmed sought bail and dismissal of the plea.

Kamrul Islam was arrested in Uttara on November 18 last year and has since been placed on multiple remands before being sent to jail. He is the seventh named accused in the case, which states that Monir was shot dead during clashes on August 5 at Shahbagh.

The victim’s wife, Rozina Akhter, filed the case in March, naming 351 accused and 500 unidentified others.
