Ex-MP and Freedom Fighter Mosharraf Hossain passes away
Former Member of Parliament and valiant freedom fighter Mosharraf Hossain has passed away at the age of 78.
He breathed his last at 1:25am while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital in Dhaka on Saturday (June 20).
He had been suffering from various age-related health complications for a prolonged period.
According to family sources, his funeral prayer (janaza) will be held on Sunday after Asr prayers at the Alexander Pilot High School ground in Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur. He will later be laid to rest at his family graveyard in Ramgati.
Mosharraf Hossain is survived by his wife, three sons, two daughters and a large number of relatives, admirers and well-wishers.
A prominent figure in both Bangladesh’s political arena and Liberation War history, Mosharraf Hossain played a significant role during the 1971 War of Independence. He served as the zonal commander of the Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF), popularly known as the Mujib Bahini, in the Noakhali and Hatiya region and was actively involved in organizing the liberation struggle.
During his student years, he emerged as a notable leader and later served as Vice President (VP) of the Shahidullah Hall Students’ Union at the University of Dhaka.
In his political career, he was elected a Member of Parliament from Lakshmipur-4 constituency in the 1988 fourth parliamentary election as a candidate of the Combined Opposition Alliance. Most recently, he contested the 2024 general election from the same constituency.
His death has cast a pall of mourning across political, social and freedom fighter circles, with many remembering his contributions to the country's independence struggle and public life.
