Senior Supreme Court lawyer and human rights advocate Manzil Morshed has emphasized the urgent need to establish a dedicated Expatriate Tribunal to safeguard the legal and property rights of Bangladeshi expatriates.

Speaking at a community dialogue with Bangladeshi expatriates in Paris on Wednesday, Morshed, who serves as President of the rights organization Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), warned that thousands of expatriates face legal harassment and delays when attempting to protect their investments and assets in Bangladesh.

“Expatriates are being deprived of justice due to legal complications and prolonged court proceedings in Bangladesh,” Morshed said. “They contribute significantly to the national economy, yet face tremendous difficulties in safeguarding their property and securing legal redress. Without a mechanism to protect their rights at home, they remain vulnerable. A dedicated Expatriate Tribunal must be formed without delay.”

The event, held at Amar Bangla Hall in Paris, was organized to engage the expatriate community on legal and civic issues. It was chaired by Helal Hossain Zahid, President of the Cumilla District Welfare Association, and moderated by community leader Ashraful Islam.

Special guest Golam Rabbani, President of HRPB’s Sweden chapter, also addressed the gathering.

In his remarks, Helal Hossain Zahid stressed the importance of ensuring voting rights for expatriates, a matter he said has been delayed due to persistent legal barriers. He called on all expatriates to unite in demanding the formation of the tribunal.

“Expatriates have long sought a platform that can address their legal challenges efficiently,” said Ashraful Islam. “In addition to voting rights, they want structured legal support through a tribunal designed specifically for their needs.”

Other speakers included freedom fighter Mojibur Rahman, Shahjahan Khan of France BNP (Habiganj), Adam Khan, President of the Narsingdi District Association, Asaduzzaman Suman of the Dhaka Divisional Association, and Aminur Rahman Faruk, Vice President of the Barishal Community France Association.

The event was well-attended by community members and covered by representatives of several local and international media outlets.
