Expelled Jamaat leader MP Gazi Nazrul gets bail

The High Court has granted eight weeks of anticipatory bail to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the expelled Jamaat-e-Islami leader and MP from Satkhira-4, in an attempted murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station in the capital.

The High Court bench of Justice K M Jahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Monday, August 10. Senior lawyer SM Shahjahan argued for the bail petition on behalf of Gazi Nazrul Islam.

On July 21, a case of attempted murder was filed against Gazi Nazrul Islam and five others at Pallabi Police Station following the circulation of a video of a "personal moment." The case was filed by Obaidur Rahman, the MP's personal driver.

In the case's first information report (FIR), Obaidur Rahman alleged that he was beaten because he protested against the MP's alleged immoral relationship and was suspected of being involved in leaking a video. Obaidur Rahman, who identified himself as the MP's personal driver, is also known to be the maternal uncle of the woman identified as Gazi Nazrul Islam's second wife.

Besides Gazi Nazrul Islam, four of his associates were also made accused in the case. They are Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Mostasim Billah and Rakibul Hasan.

Following the High Court order, Gazi Nazrul Islam has secured anticipatory bail for eight weeks, allowing him to avoid arrest in the case.
