Ex-President Shahabuddin to receive all legal benefits: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said former President Md Shahabuddin will receive all privileges and facilities entitled to a former head of state under existing laws, dismissing speculation over any immediate legal action against him.

Speaking to reporters after a ceremony honouring police personnel for bravery and distinguished service at the Secretariat on Sunday (July 26), the minister said Shahabuddin had discharged his constitutional responsibilities in accordance with the law during the final phase of the previous government, the entire tenure of the interim administration and the first six months of the current government.

"The government received full cooperation from the President throughout this period," Salahuddin Ahmed said.

Responding to questions about demands for Shahabuddin's arrest, the home minister noted that, under the Constitution, a sitting president enjoys immunity from criminal prosecution and court proceedings while in office.

He added that although individuals are free to express opinions regarding any statements made outside that constitutional protection, the government has not found any allegations warranting legal consideration so far.

He also said all citizens, including leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and other political groups, have the right to voice their opinions, stressing that the post-uprising environment continues to uphold freedom of expression.

Addressing Shahabuddin's post-presidency benefits, Salahuddin Ahmed said the former president would receive every entitlement guaranteed by law. He added that a six-month security arrangement, including protection from the Special Security Force (SSF) and the President Guard Regiment (PGR), would remain in place, alongside additional security measures provided by the police and other relevant agencies.
