Ex-Speaker Shirin Sharmin granted bail in attempted murder case
A Dhaka court granted bail to former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in a case filed over an alleged attempted murder linked to 2024 uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order on Sunday (April 12) after hearing arguments from both prosecution and defence.
According to court sources, the case was filed with Lalbagh Police Station over clashes and unrest in the area during the anti-discrimination student movement. Shirin Sharmin was named as an accused in the case and was earlier shown arrested.
She was not produced before the court during Sunday’s hearing. Her lawyers argued for bail, stating there was no specific evidence directly linking her to the alleged incident.
According to the case statement, she faced charges including attempted murder and other serious offences in connection with the violence.
The former Speaker was arrested from the Dhanmondi area on April 7. When she was first produced before the court, police had sought remand, while the defence filed for bail. Both petitions were initially rejected, and she was sent to jail custody.
