Facebook, Messenger gradually recovering after global outage

Facebook and its messaging service Messenger are gradually returning to normal operation following a service disruption that affected users in Bangladesh and several other parts of the world on Friday evening, June 12 .

The outage began around 7:21pm Bangladesh time, with users reporting difficulties logging in, news feeds failing to refresh, and Messenger automatically logging users out of their accounts . Some users were unable to access Facebook and Messenger at all, while others reported that essential features remained unavailable or were not functioning properly .

According to outage tracking site Downdetector, complaints about problems on different Facebook services spiked from 7:21pm, with most complaints related to the app . Over 5,700 users reported issues within the last 24 hours.

Users began reporting that Facebook services were slowly being restored around 8:15pm, with the main platform becoming accessible for many shortly after 8:25pm . However, several users said that some features remained unavailable or were not functioning properly even after the main platform began recovering .

The disruption affected users not only in Bangladesh but also in various countries around the world, including the United States, the Philippines, Romania, Myanmar, West Asia, and Vietnam .

The exact cause of the outage remains unclear. As of Friday night, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Messenger, had not issued any official statement regarding the cause of the disruption or the timeline for a full restoration of services .

Users are being advised to remain patient while services continue to stabilise.
