Fakhrul seeks army chief’s intervention over BNP leader Dablu’s death
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for the direct intervention of the army chief over the death of Jibannagar municipal BNP general secretary Shamsuzzaman Dablu, 50, in Chuadanga.
He described the incident as a killing carried out by members of the security forces and demanded a fair investigation and justice.
In a statement issued on January 13, Fakhrul said that on the night of January 12 some members of the security forces detained Dablu in the name of arms recovery and subjected him to inhuman torture, which led to his death. He strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep sorrow.
The BNP secretary general said such extrajudicial acts by security force members are never beneficial for the country. He added that killing Shamsuzzaman Dablu through torture is a gross violation of the country’s existing laws and justice system.
He further said that under the current interim government, all crimes must be tried through the courts, which is what the people expect. Torturing and killing someone in the name of an arms recovery operation, he said, can never be acceptable to the nation.
Calling for the army chief’s immediate intervention, Fakhrul said a neutral and proper investigation must be conducted and those responsible must be brought under the law without delay.
