Family card pilot programme to begin Tuesday, first hand over in Karail
The government will launch the pilot phase of its Family Card programme on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman set to distribute the first cards to women in Dhaka’s Karail area.
Beneficiary families will receive Tk2,500 in monthly cash support, with the first instalment to be sent to their mobile phones on the day of the launch.
The pilot phase will cover selected wards in 14 upazilas, including several low-income areas in Dhaka as well as parts of Rajbari, Chattogram, Brahmanbaria, Bandarban, Khulna, Bhola, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Bogura, Natore, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur.
Led by the Ministry of Social Welfare with support from multiple ministries, the programme will issue the card in the name of a mother or female household head aged over 18.
Officials say the card will carry key citizen data and is planned to evolve into a universal social identity card by 2030, following the completion of the four-month pilot phase.
