Father remanded for 3 days for killing 7-month-old daughter in Uttara
A court has granted a three-day remand for the father, Kabir Islam, in a case filed over the murder of his seven-month-old daughter, Rafa Moni, by throwing her to the ground in Dhaka's Uttara. The order was issued following a police petition seeking to uncover new information during the investigation.
The remand was granted on Sunday (July 26) after a hearing before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain in Dhaka. Sub-Inspector (SI) Helal Uddin of the prosecution confirmed the matter.
According to court sources, on July 15, in the Balur Maath area adjacent to Siraj Market in Uttara, Kabir Islam allegedly threw his seven-month-old daughter to the ground following a family dispute. Locals detained him and handed him over to police. The following day, he was produced before the court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sent to jail.
The critically injured child was first admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she died on July 16 while undergoing treatment. Following the child's death, her grandmother, Sharmin Akhtar, filed a murder case against Kabir Islam as the sole accused at Turag Police Station on July 17. He was subsequently shown as arrested in that case.
On July 23, the investigating officer, Turag Police Station SI Mehedi Hasan Faisal, filed a petition seeking a three-day remand for questioning the accused. On the scheduled hearing date, the accused was produced before the court and the prosecution presented the case for remand. As no lawyer appeared for the accused, the court granted the remand petition after the hearing.
The case statement mentioned that Kabir Islam, a rickshaw puller, had married Lima Akhtar about two years ago. Rafa Moni was their only child. It was alleged that Kabir Islam had long been addicted to drugs and frequently beat and mentally tortured his wife.
On the day of the incident, Lima Akhtar went to her father's house with the child to visit her ailing father. During a heated argument between the couple, Kabir Islam allegedly snatched the child from her grandmother's lap and threw her to the ground, according to the case. The child later died at the hospital while undergoing treatment.
