Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury will leave for the United States on Friday, April 10, to attend the 2026 spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

This is the finance minister's first official trip since the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office. Observers say this is a major opportunity to present Bangladesh's economic diplomacy and new economic policies to international partners.

Finance ministers, central bank governors and development experts from around the world will attend the meetings. Discussions will focus on global economic risks, growth trends and policy directions.

According to finance ministry sources, a key agenda is reviewing the latest status of Bangladesh's $5.5 billion loan programme with the IMF. To secure the next tranche, Bangladesh must meet certain conditions including increasing revenue collection, strengthening foreign exchange reserves and implementing financial sector reforms.

During the US visit, the finance minister will hold bilateral meetings with senior IMF officials. Discussions may focus on quick disbursement of loan instalments, relaxing implementation timelines for conditions and policy support to maintain economic stability.

The finance ministry said the visit could be an important turning point for Bangladesh's economy. Successful talks could increase foreign aid flow and strengthen the confidence of international investors.
