Five Bangladeshis killed in Middle East conflict: State Minister

At least five Bangladeshi nationals have been killed in the ongoing Middle East conflict involvoing US-Israel-Iran, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said on Friday (March 20).

She disclosed the figure while speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after receiving the body of a Bangladeshi killed in a missile strike in Saudi Arabia.

The minister said the government is working to ensure the safety of Bangladeshi citizens in the conflict-affected region and has initiated phased repatriation efforts from countries including Iran.

"Diplomatic missions have been maintaining regular contact with expatriates to provide necessary support," she added.

She expressed hope that the conflict would be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said financial assistance is being provided to the victims’ families. The government is bearing the cost of repatriating bodies and offering Tk 3,50,000 in compensation, with eligible beneficiaries set to receive an additional Tk 10 lakh.

Authorities said repatriation efforts will continue based on the evolving situation, with assistance available for those willing to return home.
