Thunderstorms with gusty winds may occur in five divisions of the country, including the capital Dhaka, on Pahela Baishakh (April 14), the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has said.

A five-day forecast signed by meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruk said thunderstorms with lightning may occur in some areas of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Other parts of the country may experience relatively dry weather.

Temperatures may drop slightly on that day, making the weather somewhat comfortable, according to the forecast.

The weather office said an extension of a low-pressure area currently lies over West Bengal and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the seasonal low-pressure system is active over the south Bay of Bengal, causing this changeable weather.

Earlier on Saturday, April 11, the possibility of thunderstorms with gusty winds was forecast for some areas of Sylhet division. Most other areas had partly cloudy skies with dry weather, and day and night temperatures rose slightly.

Meteorologists said such thunderstorms are normal at the beginning of Baishakh, but caution has been advised due to localised gusty winds and lightning.
