Foreign Minister leaves for three-day visit to Beijing today

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman is leaving for Beijing on Tuesday, May 5, on his first bilateral visit to China since the BNP-led government assumed office . The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed the three-day official visit from May 5 to May 7.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced that the visit is taking place at the invitation of Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

During the visit, Dr Khalilur Rahman will hold a crucial bilateral meeting with Wang Yi on May 6 . The discussions are expected to cover international geopolitics, managing the energy crisis, ongoing development projects, and expanding bilateral trade and investment.

Sources indicate that cooperation in water management, defence assistance, and China's active role in the Rohingya repatriation issue may also be on the agenda.

The foreign minister will also meet China's development minister and senior leaders of the Communist Party of China during the visit . He is accompanied by Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs.

The delegation will arrive in Beijing via Kunming and is scheduled to return to Dhaka on May 7 after a busy diplomatic programme.

China is Bangladesh's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, and bilateral relations were elevated to a "comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership" in 2024.
