Formal charges filed against 19 including Kamal Majumder at tribunal

Formal charges have been filed at the International Crimes Tribunal in a crimes against humanity case against 19 people, including former State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder, over killings in the capital's Mirpur during the July 2024 mass uprising.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the charges were filed with the tribunal's registrar on Monday.

Besides Kamal Ahmed Majumder, former MP Elias Uddin Mollah and former General Secretary of Jubo League Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil are also on the list of accused. The prosecution has not yet disclosed the names of the remaining accused.

Prosecutor Tamim told journalists that the accused have been charged with shooting dead more than 50 "innocent and unarmed students and members of the public" at Mirpur-10 roundabout and several areas of Pallabi on July 4 and 5 and July 18 and 19, 2024.

The complaint also alleged that members of law enforcement agencies and "armed cadres" of the local Awami League were involved in the incident.

The prosecutor said the events of those few days have been highlighted in one formal complaint. At the same time, the role of each of the 19 accused and how they were involved in committing the crimes have also been mentioned.

After a long investigation, the investigation agency submitted the report of this case to the Chief Prosecutor's office. Later, after scrutinising the report, it was filed as a formal charge at the tribunal.

After a formal charge is filed at the International Crimes Tribunal, a hearing is held on framing of charges. If the tribunal orders framing of charges, the trial of the concerned case formally begins.
