After serving almost one and a half years in prison, veteran Awami League leader and former Thakurgaon-2 MP Dabirul Islam has finally been released on bail.

He was released from Dinajpur District Jail at 7:10 pm on Thursday (February 19).

Earlier on the same day, the Thakurgaon court granted his bail application, paving the way for his release. Dinajpur District Jail District Officer Farhad Sarkar officially confirmed the matter to reporters.

Dabirul Islam was arrested on August 5, 2024, on charges of land grabbing and extortion after the mass uprising of students and the public. His son and former MP Mazharul Islam Sujon was also arrested in the same case. Despite being granted bail, Sujon is still imprisoned in Dinajpur Jail.

Dabirul Islam's family said that he has become seriously ill due to being in prison for a long time and not receiving proper treatment. After his release, he was taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment. The family alleged that despite repeated requests to the authorities to ensure his proper treatment while in prison, necessary measures were not taken.

On February 7, former Thakurgaon-1 MP Ramesh Chandra Sen died while undergoing treatment in the same prison. The news of Dabirul Islam's illness has sparked considerable discussion in local political circles.

Although there is relief among his followers after his release, the legal process of the cases against Dabirul Islam will continue. He is currently under observation at a specialized hospital in Dhaka and his physical examination is underway. The family has sought everyone's cooperation to ensure his proper treatment.
