Former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor SK Sur gets 3 years in jail

A Dhaka court has sentenced former Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Sitangshu Kumar Sur (SK Sur Chowdhury) to three years of rigorous imprisonment for failing to submit a wealth statement within the stipulated timeframe.

Judge Ayesha Nasrin of Dhaka's Second Special Judge's Court delivered the verdict on Tuesday (July 28).

SK Sur was produced before the court from prison during the hearing and was sent back to jail after the sentence was pronounced.

According to court sources, the verdict came after the completion of the trial in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Case documents state that, as part of an investigation into allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income, the ACC directed SK Sur to submit a detailed statement of assets. The order required him to disclose all movable and immovable properties, liabilities, sources of income, and assets held in his own name or in the names of his dependants or nominees.

Although SK Sur collected the official notice and prescribed declaration form on October 27 last year, he failed to submit the statement within the required 21 working days.

As a result, on December 23, ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain filed a case against SK Sur, his wife Suparna Sur Chowdhury, and their daughter Nandita Sur Chowdhury.

Following the investigation, ACC Deputy Director Md Ahsan Uddin submitted the charge sheet to the court on August 25. On November 6 of the same year, the court formally framed charges against SK Sur and ordered the trial to begin.

After recording the testimonies of seven prosecution witnesses, the court delivered its verdict on Tuesday.

Earlier, on January 14, 2025, the ACC arrested SK Sur from the Segunbagicha area of Dhaka. He has remained in custody since his arrest.
