Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque released from jail
Former chief justice A B M Khairul Haque has been released from jail after securing bail in all cases against him. He walked free from the Central Jail in Keraniganj, Dhaka, around 4:15pm on Wednesday (August 19) .
Additional Inspector General of Prisons Md Jahangir Kabir confirmed the matter. He said Khairul Haque was released according to the rules after receiving a copy of the court order.
The former chief justice was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year. He had been in jail since then. He was shown arrested in a total of nine cases at various times .
On August 10, the High Court granted interim bail to Khairul Haque in a case filed with Banani Police Station. Later, after securing bail in eight separate cases, the investigating officer applied to have him shown arrested in the Banani Police Station case as well .
Finally, on Monday (August 17), the Appellate Division upheld the former chief justice's bail in the attempted murder and Explosive Substances Act case filed with Banani Police Station. This removed the legal bar to his release .
However, although he is now on bail, A B M Khairul Haque cannot leave the country without the court's permission. The Appellate Division's order included this directive.
The High Court's order that Khairul Haque cannot be arrested or harassed without a specific case has also been upheld by the Appellate Division .
